Over the Dream is a documentary by Ivan Demkin centered on The International, Dota 2’s major tournament, as it returned in 2015. Rather than surveying the event broadly, the film follows the experience of Virtus.pro and several people whose relationships with the tournament differ sharply.
One strand focuses on Virtus.pro, one of four CIS teams invited to compete, and asks what the team hoped to achieve. Another follows Anton “Mob5ter” Erohin, a Russian game broadcaster who was working toward attending the tournament in Seattle. Their perspectives bring together competition and the work of covering it, showing the event through both a team’s ambitions and a broadcaster’s professional hopes.
The documentary also turns to Dread, who had spent more than five years with Dota 2 but was attending The International as an analyst rather than a player. His feelings and the film’s central question, what the tournament means to these figures, give the story a personal focus. The result is a portrait of a major esports gathering as both a career milestone and an occasion that can carry different meanings for people close to the game.
