Orcs Must Die! casts the player as a War Mage protecting a chain of fortresses from a rampaging fantasy horde. Its premise is direct, but its appeal lies in the mix of hands-on combat and deliberate defense: each fortress has its own layout, from twisting passages to open chambers, and the invading enemies include ogres and flying hellbats as well as orcs.
The War Mage can bring weapons and spells into battle, while a broad trap selection invites players to shape the enemy’s route and punish the resulting advance. Arrow walls, spike traps, spinning blades, and flaming brimstone offer different ways to deal damage; minions can also be called in to help. Between encounters, persistent upgrades improve traps as the story campaign unfolds across three acts and multiple difficulty levels, with Nightmare mode providing a tougher variation.
That combination makes this a single-player action-strategy game built around repeated, score-conscious defense rather than a shared multiplayer session. A skull ranking system and leaderboard add reasons to refine a fortress run, while the campaign’s changing layouts and enemy mix keep the core task focused on choosing how to stop the next assault.
