Once Upon A KATAMARI turns a cosmic mishap into a rolling adventure: the King accidentally crushes Earth, the Moon, and numerous planets while handling a peculiar scroll. As the Prince, players roll a katamari to gather objects and restore the stars, traveling through settings that include the Jurassic Era, the Ice Age, and historic Japan. The time-spanning premise gives the familiar act of collecting a playful backdrop, with each era part of the journey to rebuild the sky.
The game adds new stages, a new soundtrack, and support tools such as a magnet that draws nearby objects toward the katamari. Players can take the Prince into the adventure or select from 68 cousins and kin, then customize their colors and faces. That combination of rolling, collectible attraction, and character personalization gives the game its own flavor within its action-and-casual design.
Alongside its single-player adventure, Once Upon A KATAMARI features KatamariBall, a competitive galactic sport. Its format includes online competition against other cousins and offline matches against CPU opponents, making multiplayer a distinct part of the game rather than simply a variation on its solo journey.
