Nuclear Option casts players as pilots in a near-future conflict, where aircraft contend with a dynamic battlefield rather than isolated aerial duels. Its combat scenarios range from intercepting bombers and fighting enemy aircraft to attacking ground forces, with advanced weapons that include missiles, bombs and nuclear arms. That combination gives the game a broad combat-flight focus, balancing air-to-air engagements with strikes against targets below.
Aircraft handling is central to the design. The game models flight effects such as stalls, spins and g-forces, while damage to individual aircraft parts can alter how a plane flies. Cockpit displays help pilots identify nearby threats and track flight information, and controls can be configured for different devices or a mouse-based virtual joystick. A varied aircraft roster includes conventional fighters and bombers alongside helicopters and vertical-takeoff aircraft, giving missions different flying profiles.
Players can build missions with the included editor and fly them solo or with friends. Multiplayer supports both cooperative and competitive combat, while AI aircraft and ground vehicles take part in large battles across persistent battlefields.
