Normality casts players as Kent Knutson, an awkward dreamer living in Neutropolis, where a sinister force has turned a once-vibrant city into a place of apathy. After being imprisoned for whistling in public and placed under home arrest, Kent must venture outside and investigate what has happened. The strange questions surrounding the city, including why its most successful company makes furniture, give the adventure a deliberately bizarre comic tone.
The game uses point-and-click play, with a distinctive voodoo doll interface for interacting with its world. Exploring Neutropolis means moving through detailed, surreal locations, gathering clues and tackling puzzles whose solutions can be twisted or unexpected. Motion-capture sequences accompany this investigation, while the central mystery asks players to piece together why the city is so tightly controlled. The unusual premise and puzzle-focused design make the game more than a conventional city exploration adventure.
Normality is listed as single-player, so its play format is a solitary investigation rather than a shared or competitive experience.
