Nine Sols is a hand-drawn, single-player 2D action-platformer set in New Kunlun, once home to an ancient alien race. Its hero, Yi, awakens after a long absence and pursues the nine Sols, rulers of the forsaken realm. The revenge story unfolds in a setting that blends cyberpunk elements with Taoism and Eastern mythology, while anime-style landscapes and manga-inspired cutscenes shape its visual identity.
Combat centers on deflection: Yi can slash, deflect and charge into enemies, and use a Taoist talisman. Fights combine fast action with platforming, while encounters with ancient guardians and other creatures call for Yi’s moves and godly bow. Beyond combat, players traverse interconnected regions, discover secrets and piece together the story behind Yi’s revenge. Interacting with inhabitants can yield upgrades, new abilities and useful technology.
Its format follows Yi’s quest through New Kunlun, connecting deflection-focused battles with investigation of the realm’s mysteries. The Taopunk design, where cyberpunk meets Taoist and mythological influences, gives this journey a distinctive setting without displacing its central focus on combat and exploration.
