In Nine Parchments, apprentice wizards abandon the Astral Academy to seek the Nine Parchments before they have completed the usual years of study. That premise turns magical misadventure into the game’s defining tone: the young wizards have new spells, but little training or supervision. Set in the fairytale kingdom associated with Trine, the action is viewed from above, with boss fights and battles against strange creatures.
Combat centres on building a spellbook and learning to handle its elemental magic. Each wizard begins with three spells from different elements, while recovered parchments add further spells to the pool. Players can freeze foes, set them alight or call down lightning, then spend skill points on talents that strengthen their powers. Friendly fire gives spell placement a cooperative risk: magic can hit an ally as readily as an enemy, while resurrection offers a way to help when a fight goes badly. Staves, hats and additional wizard characters add further things to discover as the adventure progresses.
The game supports solo play as well as cooperative sessions for up to four players, either online or locally, and also offers Astral Challenges, a separate arena-combat mode without the campaign’s story.
