NIMBY Rails is a railway-management sandbox built around the real world as its map. Players lay routes across familiar geography, linking places while respecting existing roads and streets. The premise gives the design a distinctive tension: ambitious connections must also contend with the terrain of urban infrastructure and the practical viability of crossings.
The network can be shaped at different levels of detail. Automatic tools help place stations and connect them with double tracks and signaling, while the track editor also allows direct control over tracks, signals, and buildings. Players can operate trams, subways, commuter, regional, and high-speed trains, choosing among tunnels, viaducts, and ground-level routes with trade-offs involving the environment, speed, and company finances. Simulated passenger demand responds to travel time and fares, and individual passengers may transfer between trains as demand shifts by time of day and week.
Its play format is single-player and offline-first, with optional cooperative multiplayer in hosted sessions. The available detail ranges from streamlined route construction to hands-on infrastructure design, making the core appeal the freedom to test railway ideas on a detailed real-world map.
