Nightmare Reaper casts the player as a fighter rising to prevent a looming doom, facing nightmares in a dark, violent blend of classic 2.5D first-person shooters and modern action games. Its levels are open-ended, densely packed with enemies, and punctuated by unexpected events, secrets, and eruptions of blood and treasure. A mysterious, understated story gives the combat a broader purpose without displacing the action.
Loot and progression shape the run: gold found in the levels buys character upgrades and new abilities through minigames, while weapons arrive as drops. The arsenal spans 80 unique weapons, with possible combinations of more than 30 enchantment types. A mix of manually made and randomly generated levels adds variety to the level design, and the game also offers many modes. That combination of direct shooter action, changing spaces, and build-focused rewards sets Nightmare Reaper apart from a straightforward retro-style shooter.
