New Star GP combines arcade racing with the decisions of running a motorsport team. Players guide technological development, plan race strategy, and take the wheel, following a career that starts in the 1980s and advances through later decades to the present. Its retro visuals and soundtrack give this blend a clear throwback identity, while the team-management layer makes progress about more than driving.
Race preparation and execution both matter: players choose tyres and manage wear, component reliability, fuel load, slipstreaming, and pit strategy. The game also describes changing weather, mechanical failures, tyre blowouts, and multi-car pileups as possible race events. Between competitions, players can upgrade the car or equip staff perks. The event selection includes Grand Prix races, eliminations, time trials, checkpoint challenges, and one-on-one rival races, with new opponents and cars arriving as the career moves into another decade.
The format ranges from solo career play to shared-screen competition for two, three, or four players, with points carrying between multiplayer events. A Hot Lap mode adds a separate pursuit of leaderboard times against ghost cars.
