Neon Abyss casts you as a member of Grim Squad, a task force set up by Hades to infiltrate the Abyss and defeat the New Gods. Its core is run-and-gun action shaped by roguelike progression: each attempt sends you through a dungeon where random item drops provide passive effects, and those effects can stack. The result is a game built around changing combinations rather than a fixed loadout.
Death feeds into that progression instead of closing it off, empowering you for subsequent attempts. Runs can also unlock rooms, items, bosses, special rules, and endings, while the dungeons are described as expandable and tailored to a player’s style. Eggs found along the way hatch into pets with special abilities; survive longer and those companions evolve. Random diversions, including piano performances, meditation challenges, and dance competitions, offer loot alongside the combat.
Its defining appeal is the contrast between frantic shooting and a steady stream of run-specific possibilities: stacked item effects, evolving pets, and unlocks give each descent room to develop differently.
