Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword is a standalone expansion that carries the series’ open sandbox warfare into an era of firearms. Its storyline draws on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel, while the wider campaign lets players choose allies and enemies, pursue quests, and contend over provinces and castles. Three main story-driven questlines become available once the player is known within a faction, and multiple endings give the campaign more than one possible conclusion.
Firearms reshape the established combat model: muskets, pistols, grenades, and other advanced weapons appear on the battlefield, while pistols and muskets can also serve as sidearms in close combat. Before a siege, players can choose from additional options, and armies are customizable down to individual weapons and pieces of armor. The expansion also adds quest types and political intrigue among its factions, combining campaign decisions with hands-on preparation for battle.
The design balances open-ended choices with faction storylines and historically researched equipment. Multiplayer offers its own content, including the Captain mode and Captain Team Deathmatch, alongside new maps. Rather than treating gunpowder weapons as a cosmetic change, the game places them within a combat system built around both firearms and hand-to-hand fighting, giving this standalone entry a distinct focus within Mount & Blade’s medieval-inspired warfare.
