Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™ is a comic adventure about aspiring pirate Guybrush Threepwood and his pursuit of the legendary treasure of Big Whoop. His quest is complicated by the return of zombie pirate LeChuck, seeking revenge after Guybrush’s earlier adventure. Along the way, Guybrush faces challenges such as voodoo dolls, spitting contests and amusement parks, while meeting old friends and new enemies.
The adventure offers a choice between the classic point-and-click interface and direct character control. An in-game hint system provides assistance with puzzles, and object highlighting helps identify interactive items. A distinctive feature is the ability to switch scene-for-scene between the Special Edition and Classic modes during gameplay, bringing the two presentations together without interrupting the adventure.
The Special Edition reimagines the sequel with newly drawn high-definition art, a remastered and re-recorded score using live instruments, and voice-over featuring members of the original Monkey Island cast. An in-game art viewer presents artwork from both the Classic and Special Edition versions, while selected scenes include commentary from Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. These additions frame the pirate story with both updated presentation and glimpses of the game’s visual and development history.
