Megaquarium turns aquarium curation into an economic simulation, asking players to build a public attraction from a handful of tanks and basic livestock. Its appeal lies in balancing a living collection with the practical work of running a visitor destination: exhibits must suit their animals, while the wider aquarium needs to keep guests comfortable and the business financially sound.
The design links creative layout choices to operational consequences. Players choose among 97 species, each with distinct care requirements, and manage staff whose skills can be developed in different ways. Equipment, animal needs, food costs and tank investments all affect the finances, while guest facilities and gift-shop traffic add another layer of management. Research unlocks new livestock and equipment as visitors experience the displays, making expansion part of the aquarium’s economy rather than simply a decorating exercise.
Its campaign teaches the management systems through ten objective-driven levels, while sandbox mode offers customisable settings and randomly generated challenges. The central design challenge is coordinating animals, staff, infrastructure and visitor flow into a profitable, coherent aquarium.
