Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms is a downloadable expansion to Medieval II: Total War, built around four campaigns with expanded maps: Britannia, Teutonic, Crusades, and New World. Its premise is territorial conflict across distinct regions, including broad areas of North and South America opened for conquest. The expansion adds 13 factions, more than 110 units, 50 building types, and over 60 territories across its maps, giving the original strategy framework a substantial set of new campaign settings and forces.
The regional focus shapes the expansion’s variety. The New World campaign makes factions such as the Aztecs, Apaches, and Mayans playable, while the other campaigns turn attention to the British Isles, northern Europe, and the Middle East. Across these theaters, players command units and develop settlements through the listed building types, with new agents also included. Rather than centering on one additional map, Kingdoms distributes its new territory and factions across four separate campaign contexts.
Kingdoms also extends multiplayer with new maps and scenarios, plus a one-versus-one hotseat campaign mode played on the same computer. That format gives the expansion a distinct shared-screen option alongside its campaign additions. Its identity rests on breadth: multiple historical and regional fronts, newly playable factions, a large roster of units, and expanded settlement options, all presented as an official expansion to the base game rather than a standalone strategy title.
