Set in the Succession Wars of 3015, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries casts you as the heir to a mercenary outfit nearly destroyed by conspiring factions. Its campaign pairs a quest for revenge and glory with the work of rebuilding the company, placing the player between interstellar intrigue and the changing loyalties of the Inner Sphere’s Great Houses.
Combat centers on piloting BattleMechs against enemy machines, vehicles, aircraft and fortified targets. The machines are not interchangeable weapons: the game describes more than 50 chassis, with variants, equipment and damage states, while battlefield salvage and market purchases feed into maintaining the company’s forces. Between contracts, players acquire and service Mechs, hire pilots, negotiate contract terms and manage faction relationships, connecting tactical missions to longer-term command decisions.
That blend of combat and management is available through a campaign, while Instant Action offers isolated missions that can be customized outside campaign restrictions. The campaign’s evolving faction relationships and the open-ended mission setup give those formats different ways to frame the same mercenary-war premise.
