MateEngine is a customizable desktop companion built around animated 3D characters rather than a conventional game-world adventure. It starts with the included character Zome and supports custom VRM avatars, letting users place a virtual presence on screen while they work or use other applications. Mouse interaction gives the companion much of its personality: its eyes, head, and upper body follow the cursor, while moving near its hands can prompt it to reach toward the pointer.
Its activity also responds to the desktop environment. Users can choose which apps trigger dancing when music plays, pet the character by hovering over its head, or reposition it by dragging. Other touches include chibi transformation, adjustable animation and graphics settings, particle effects, and simple local-AI chat. The listing describes some window-sitting behavior as experimental and notes that taskbar or window sitting is currently disabled, so these features should not be treated as an unrestricted part of the experience.
That makes MateEngine’s play format closer to an interactive desktop presence than a session-based multiplayer game: its defining loop is watching and prompting a companion while doing other things, not joining matches with other players.
