Mark of the Ninja casts the player as a ninja marked with cursed tattoos that heighten the senses. Its hand-painted environments and distinctive 2D animation frame a stealth adventure built around observation and choice, rather than a single prescribed approach to each encounter. The central question is whether to slip through as an unseen ghost or strike as a silent assassin.
That choice carries into the level design: players can pursue a run without killing anyone or eliminate opponents, while optional objectives, hidden collectibles, and three score challenges per level offer further goals. Tools and techniques can be upgraded to suit a preferred style, and unlockable abilities and items open different avenues through the game. Custom keyboard and mouse controls accompany gamepad support on PC.
Completing the main story unlocks New Game Plus, which adds challenges and rewards, giving the campaign another mode to explore. Its appeal lies in weighing patience, movement, and aggression against the options each situation presents.
