March of Empires casts players as rulers seeking to unite a medieval realm under one banner. Its strategy loop combines kingdom development with territorial conflict: construct buildings, fortify a castle, dispatch armies, fight barbarians and conquer territory. Players choose a faction such as a Shogun, Highland King, Northern Tsar or Desert Sultan, each associated with an army advantage that supports a distinct style of play.
Battles are only part of the contest. Players select formations and time commands to take advantage of changing seasons, while Champions lead armies and can be equipped to improve their skills. Quests send heroes and adventurers after treasure, and regional structures such as Trade Centres, Temples and Stockpiles create shared interests for allies. Alliance diplomacy also shapes the design: groups may negotiate or scheme, and control of five fortified castles brings unique benefits and the ability to propose Policies for a vote across the realm.
The broader goal is to build influence and ultimately reach the Throne of Might.
