Magic Research casts the player as headmaster of a newly created institution, pursuing knowledge and reputation in order to compete in the Tournament of Magic. That goal gives its school-management setting a clear direction: advancement is not just about collecting magical knowledge, but also about making the institution prominent enough to face its rivals.
The design combines spellcasting with research across different magical schools, resource accumulation, campus construction, and the management of researchers and apprentices. More than a hundred spells and hidden features give discovery a central role, while secret storylines can permanently alter the game. The school’s progress therefore unfolds through both practical management and the search for new uses of magic.
Retirement bonuses add an incremental structure: restarting lets the player make faster progress on another run. The store lists Magic Research as single-player, so its play format is an individual pursuit of school growth and magical discovery rather than a shared multiplayer competition. The Tournament of Magic supplies the competitive ambition within that solo framework.
