Machinarium follows Josef, a small robot cast out into the scrap yard beyond a city inhabited entirely by robots. He must make his way back into the rusty city, confront the Black Cap Brotherhood, and rescue Berta, his robot-girl friend. That clear rescue story gives the adventure a personal aim while making Machinarium itself, an old and legendary robot metropolis, the setting for Josef’s return.
Progress relies on logical puzzles, adventure quests, brain teasers, and mini-games rather than lengthy dialogue. The characters communicate through comic-style bubbles, simple animations, and symbols, so understanding their exchanges is part of the game’s visual language. Hand-drawn two-dimensional backgrounds and characters, accompanied by carefully crafted animation, give the city and its inhabitants a distinctive illustrated identity. An original soundtrack by Floex completes that presentation.
Machinarium is a single-player adventure, so its play format centers on one player working through Josef’s puzzles and story, rather than coordinating with others.
