Lord of the Dark Castle is a turn-based dungeon crawler built around deliberate, risky choices rather than rapid combat. Its gothic setting is rendered in hand-painted 2D art, while each run sends the Hero through randomized levels and introduces new monsters deeper in the dungeon. The result is a changing descent, not a fixed sequence of encounters.
Combat follows a clear alternating-turn rule: the Hero moves or attacks, then the monsters take their turn. Position matters because ending a move beside a monster lets it strike first. Enemies are designed as active competitors, too; they can loot items and use the same armor, weapons, and spells as the Hero, while gold-carrying monsters may visit shops to buy equipment. Skill choices add another layer of planning, with each skill useful on its own and no dependencies between them.
The game is played in Hardcore Mode, where there is no save game and death is permanent. Its description also warns that Normal mode can be difficult, so a promising start does not guarantee a successful run.
