Life is Hard casts the player as the manager of a fledgling town in a challenging godsim and strategy setting. The settlement begins as a small village, and the broad task is to develop it while keeping its people alive. Its premise joins town-building with survival and RPG elements, giving the campaign a focus on both daily needs and larger political choices.
That management involves preventing famine and pestilence, expanding the domain, and deciding whether to trade or make war with neighboring settlements. Players also attract new residents and craft weapons and armor. A choice of patron god adds a supernatural dimension: six gods offer distinct spells and a hero, while neglecting a patron can bring divine wrath on the town. The storyline further asks players to contend with the necromancer Tenebris and choose how to respond to the Northern Kingdom.
Its challenge is designed around repeated attempts and different approaches to survival, while settlers’ individual traits and skills mean each settlement can develop differently. Those details make Life is Hard less about one fixed route to prosperity and more about balancing town needs, divine favor, and the consequences of a chosen path.
