In modern-day Japan, where Kyoto has become the capital, students known as “eligibles” travel to the otherworld of Xanadu. Protagonist Kamiya Rei arrives at Hirasaka Academy with the power to fight monsters in Xanadu’s labyrinth, joining companions in a story that moves between school life and the otherworld. The city is part of that setting, not merely a backdrop: after school, Rei can visit Kyoto locations, gather information, shop, and spend time with classmates.
Exploration and combat shift between two formats. The labyrinth’s side-scrolling 2D sections lead to gates that open into 3D battles, where players use skill attacks and technical maneuvers against enemies. Progression also connects these activities: points earned through exploration and daily routines improve Rei’s Soul-Device, unlocking actions and skills, while Guardian Cards gained in 3D battles strengthen the character and add attack options such as fire, ice, and ranged attacks.
At the academy, action cards chosen before class affect subject parameters and relationships with other characters; later, chats and Kyoto side quests add more ways to engage with the cast. That blend gives the game a distinct rhythm beyond its battles alone.
