Set in Northern Canada in October 1970, Kona follows private detective Carl Faubert after a vandalism investigation leaves him stranded near Atamipek Lake. A sudden snowstorm has cut him off from his client and the area’s inhabitants, turning the case into a search for answers amid an eerie, apparently deserted community. The game frames its mystery through a vintage rural setting where local history and folklore meet surreal events.
Investigation and survival define the experience. Players explore a vast, frigid environment to uncover what has happened, while also battling the elements. That combination gives the detective premise a physical edge: Faubert must contend with the harsh surroundings as he tries to make sense of the town’s silence. An omniscient, third-person storyteller presents the tale, and an atmospheric soundtrack featuring music by Quebec folk band CuréLabel supports its chilly mood.
Kona is a single-player adventure, so its play format centers on one person following Faubert’s investigation rather than shared or competitive sessions. Its blend of detective work, environmental danger, and a 1970s rural atmosphere is the defining appeal.
