Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition turns a traditional pen-and-paper fantasy session into a retro, pixel-art, turn-based RPG. Its playful premise places you in two roles at once: the people around the table, who choose character classes and control heroes, and the game master, who sets up encounters. The party’s adventure is to explore a perilous fantasy world and defeat a dark mage.
Combat gives that game-master role a concrete twist: you choose which battles to fight and can assemble groups of monsters, balancing challenge against the promise of rewards. Between encounters, quests, equipment, gold, and leveling give the party room to grow. The game also names blacksmithing, enchanting, mining, gathering, and hidden treasures among its activities, while character choices let you pair classes such as knights and mages with role-players such as a grandma or kid brother.
The +1 Edition adds dungeons with traps, treasures, monsters, and bosses, alongside a tavern for stashing heroes and switching party members. It also offers more character options in battle and an extended campaign.
