Kings of Hell is a 3D beat ’em up set in 2112, a century after the Rapture has left Earth under demonic rule. Its story follows Lutin, Enfer, Gremile and Mal as they take on the five Dukes of Hell, with the throne waiting for whoever can claim dominion over the ruined world. The cel-shaded presentation and early-2000s beat ’em up influence give this apocalyptic premise a deliberately stylized arcade-brawler frame.
Combat centers on distinct character abilities, moves and combos. Players can build a combo meter by battering enemies, then cash it in for powerful grabs; the roster includes four initial character choices, with more characters to unlock. Levels are densely packed sandboxes where objectives can be approached in different ways, and demon encounters range from fast-moving Mercenary Buer to the imposing Duke Baal. Collectibles add further reasons to explore, including a model-viewing Trophy Viewer and a Sticker Gallery with emotes and artwork.
The game supports solo play as well as cooperative and online co-op, while its co-op design also has a competitive edge: friends can fight demons together and vie for points toward the King of Hell title. Players may explore together or split up across the sandbox spaces.
