Journey to Incrementalia casts the player as a power-seeking necromancer bound for Incrementalia, a lost city of legend. The route is blocked by 99 walls, and progress centers on gathering mana and commanding infernal minions to batter through them. Its dark-fantasy premise is deliberately whimsical rather than solemn, with side quests and Bonesley, a skeleton companion who may not be as helpful as he seems.
The game pairs incremental growth with an expansive set of ways to shape a build: more than 100 skills, spells, items, and abilities can be discovered and combined. Skills can be reset at any time, encouraging experimentation with different synergies instead of locking players into one path. Players can summon thousands of minions, while the advertised New Game+ modes, legendary items, and prestige abilities add further systems to the design. A synth dark-fantasy soundtrack inspired by DOS classics rounds out its distinctive tone.
The game’s appeal, as described, lies in the cycle of gathering resources, refining a build, and using growing power to overcome its barriers, alongside a not-so-serious story with an ending.
