Inside the Backrooms sends players into a gloomy maze of familiar-looking rooms, where survival depends on finding a way forward through danger and uncertainty. Inspired by the Backrooms creepypasta, it uses recognizable entities and unsettling surroundings to build its horror. Exploration is practical as well as atmospheric: rooms may contain items or information that help open new areas, while going deeper brings greater danger.
Its puzzles range from straightforward to laborious, and their solutions change between games, giving repeat attempts a different problem-solving angle. Players can tackle them individually or cooperatively, while managing limited inventory space and supplies such as a flashlight, radios, and protective equipment. Stamina, anxiety, and entities with distinct attack behaviors add survival pressures; proximity voice chat lets nearby teammates communicate, but speaking carries a risk because entities may hear them.
The game supports online cooperative play for up to four people, alongside single-player play. That format puts a clear choice at the center of the experience: navigate the rooms alone, or coordinate with friends as you solve puzzles and evade threats. The documented design also describes multiple levels with different mechanics and escalating difficulty, framing each expedition as a combination of exploration, resource management, and escape.
