IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover is a World War II flight-combat simulation set during the 1940 Battle of Britain. Players take the role of a British RAF pilot facing German Luftwaffe and Italian forces in a campaign for control of the skies. Its historical setting gives the aerial encounters a defined theater and opposing sides, rather than presenting flight combat as a setting-free contest.
The aircraft roster spans English, German, and Italian machines, including the Spitfire, Hurricane, and Messerschmitt Bf-109. The simulation emphasizes aircraft detail through a damage model in which individual components can be damaged. Missions unfold across a broad landscape that includes London, towns in England, and areas of northern France and southern Belgium, pairing air combat with detailed ground vehicles, buildings, and environments.
The game supports both single-player and multiplayer, with customizable multiplayer modes for large ongoing battles as well as deathmatch-style free-for-alls. Its combination of historical aircraft, component-level damage, and varied multiplayer structures distinguishes its approach to combat flight simulation.
