IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad recreates the World War II air battles around the city through a simulation built around aircraft handling, combat and a historically grounded campaign. Its single-player Career mode follows the battle’s chronology, from the German advance toward the Volga to the city’s liberation. Players choose a pilot biography and serve in a fighter, attack or bomber squadron, with progression from new pilot to squadron commander.
The flight model emphasizes detailed aircraft systems, aerodynamics and damage, while the large-scale map includes modeled buildings and landscapes. Missions can involve aerial combat or attacks on ground targets, including vehicles and artillery; the game also allows players to operate tanks. For a more tailored sortie, Quick Mission mode lets players assemble a custom combat scenario, while the career’s weekly newspaper offers historical context about the war and squadron progression.
Multiplayer adds team battles, dogfight duels and cooperative online play on dedicated player-controlled servers, alongside single-player career and AI combat.
