Idle Cultivation takes inspiration from Chinese mythology and games, framing its idle RPG progression as a pursuit of immortality. Players absorb spiritual energy through cultivation techniques, seek breakthroughs into greater realms, and strengthen a character through training, gathering, crafting, and combat. The long arc can continue beyond immortality: reincarnation restarts the journey while empowering the soul, with further stages to pursue and a legacy to establish through founding a sect.
Combat adds tactical choices to the steady advancement. The game offers six weapon types and five elemental forces: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. Each element is countered by another, so choosing an advantageous element can change a fight. Adventures lead into locations and dungeons populated by beasts, monsters, and other experts, with loot as a reward. Skill development spans cultivation and supporting disciplines, while Alchemy, Forging, Talisman, Mining, and Gardening supply ways to make or gather useful materials.
The design also reaches beyond an individual fighter. Reincarnation uses Soul Power to unlock effects such as higher skill ceilings, new weapons, multiple actions, and artifacts; sect leadership brings disciples to recruit, missions to assign, and structures to build.
