HIVESWAP: ACT 2 follows Joey and Xefros through Alternia, a volatile alien world populated by characters who may offer help or pose a threat. As the second installment in a four-part narrative adventure series set in Andrew Hussie’s Homestuck universe, it continues a larger story while providing an in-game recap for newcomers. The setting’s hand-drawn 2D animation, illustrated alien landscapes and colorful cast give the journey a playful adventure-game look, even as its dangers turn serious.
Play centers on exploring and talking with the planet’s trolls, solving their problems and working through puzzles. The store description contrasts these challenges with the slapstick puzzles Joey knows: on Alternia, it says, the stakes can be life or death. Choices are also part of the design, with the game stating they affect the fate of both worlds. An original soundtrack by James Roach and Toby Fox adds orchestral and eclectic music to the journey.
ACT 2 also supports importing an ACT 1 save, allowing it to remember prior choices and potentially unlock hidden secrets; players without that save can begin fresh. Its mix of point-and-click traditions, narrative decisions and continuing plot defines the experience more than competitive or cooperative play.
