Set in the seventeenth-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Hellish Quart centers on duels between period-inspired warriors, including Cossacks, Hussars, Tatars and Musketeers. Reconstructed clothing and a cinematic story frame its historical setting, while the central attraction is direct sword fighting rather than abstract exchanges of blows.
Combat uses active ragdolls and real-time physics, with four gamepad buttons mapped to attack angles. Timing, technique, speed and distance all matter; when a fighter is not attacking, an automatic guard helps block incoming strikes. Different button combinations enable special attacks and combos, and players can practise with wooden weapons or modern HEMA gear. The design draws on motion-captured fencing techniques to give each encounter a physical, measured character.
Hellish Quart offers a cinematic story mode alongside arcade, sparring, quick-fight and survival options, as well as local multiplayer. Optional VR is also supported, adding another way to experience its close-quarters fencing.
