Hell is Us is a third-person action-adventure set in a country fractured by civil war and a mysterious calamity. Supernatural creatures haunt the region, and modern weapons cannot defeat them. The player searches for answers while cutting through dangerous territory, with a sword and drone as allies. That combination gives the journey both a personal mystery to unravel and an immediate fight for survival.
Exploration deliberately withholds the usual navigation aids: there is no map, compass, or quest marker to steer the way. Instead, level design and writing encourage players to make decisions, follow their instincts, and uncover discoveries for themselves. Combat uses purpose-forged swords, spears, and axes against the supernatural creatures; surviving requires learning how to fight them and using the drone wisely. The design links observation and judgment to action rather than relying on a stream of marked objectives.
The game is listed as single-player, so its play format centers on one person’s progress through this hostile world, not a shared multiplayer session. Its central theme, as described by creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, is the recurring cycle of human violence, driven by human emotions and passions.
