Half-Life 2: VR Mod is a fan-made modification that adds virtual-reality support to Valve’s 2004 PC classic. It places players in Gordon Freeman’s role as he faces the Combine in City 17, adapting the original adventure for hands-on immersion rather than presenting a separate story. The mod requires ownership of Half-Life 2 on Steam and was not created by Valve.
Its design centers on tracked motion controls and room-scale VR interaction. Players can physically move around, pick up and throw objects, climb ladders, and manually reload weapons. Gun handling includes two-handed weapons, functional iron sights, ammunition stored over the shoulder, and quick weapon selection through a radial menu. The mod also describes playing catch with Dog as one of its embodied interactions.
A range of options accommodates different preferences: left-handed support, laser sights, and an arcade-style quick reload sit alongside comfort features such as teleport movement, a motion vignette, and a third-person vehicle camera. The mod is playable on VR headsets supported by SteamVR, with optional support for bHaptics vests and ProVolver haptic pistols. Its distinctive appeal is the effort to make familiar Half-Life 2 actions feel physical, from handling weapons to exploring the environments.
