GWENT: Rogue Mage is a single-player expansion to GWENT: The Witcher Card Game, set centuries before Geralt’s time. It follows the ambitious mage Alzur and his companion Lily on a quest to create a living weapon against the monsters unleashed by the Conjunction of the Spheres. That campaign premise gives the card battles a distinct purpose: Alzur is trying to answer a threat to humanity, not simply pursuing victory in a multiplayer match.
Its design combines roguelike, deckbuilding and strategy elements with GWENT’s card-battle mechanics. Battles last one round, making each card choice consequential, while Alzur can spend energy each turn to cast spells from an expanding Grimoire. Energy can be replenished between battles at Places of Power or through random map encounters, linking decisions in combat to the journey between fights. Alzur begins unable to respond to an opponent’s final card, but campaign progress and high-end bonuses can eventually give players control over battle flow.
The run structure adds further variation: after Alzur completes his first two experiments, Curses become available as flexible difficulty modifiers, bringing greater challenge to subsequent runs. The emphasis here is on shaping a deck, managing spells and adapting to each run’s challenges.
