Guacamelee! Gold Edition casts players as a luchador in a magical world inspired by Mexican culture and folklore. Its Metroidvania-style adventure combines exploration with brawling, as Juan uses his fists to fight evil and uncovers wrestling techniques such as the Rooster Uppercut. The setting’s folklore influences its cast and atmosphere, giving the journey a distinct identity beyond its action-platforming foundation.
Combat and traversal are deliberately intertwined: moves used against enemies also help overcome platforming challenges. A dimension-switching mechanic shifts between the overlapping World of the Living and World of the Dead, opening routes and secrets. The Gold Edition also includes the El Infierno expansion, where challenges can unlock costumes for Juan and Tostada; costumes alter hero attributes, adding a customization layer to the adventure.
The full story supports drop-in, drop-out local co-operative play for two players, alongside single-player play. The edition also includes Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition on Steam for Gold Edition owners, with additional powers, levels and enemies, plus improved gameplay and graphics.
