GTFO casts players as prisoners sent by the Warden into The Complex, a decayed research facility whose expeditions descend through dangerous tunnels. Each new Work Order defines a Rundown, and the team’s objective is to clear its expeditions. The bleak premise makes progress feel like a coordinated escape from an environment designed to punish mistakes.
The game is built around teams of four, with bots available to fill missing places. Before each expedition, players choose gear, boosters, and weapons and balance their roles. Stealth matters because light, noise, and vibration can wake the hibernating Sleepers; once combat erupts, teams need to manage their fire, use bottlenecks and kill zones, and reload when they can. This shift from careful movement to tactical fighting gives GTFO its defining tension.
Bots provide a fallback, but the game’s emphasis on communication and strategy points to human teamwork as its preferred format. Clearing expeditions and Rundowns also earns cosmetic gear, marking progress without changing the core challenge of surviving the next descent.
