GRIME II casts the player as a Formless, an art mimic exploring a strange land in the GRIME universe. Its painted-nail and giant-vase settings are more than unusual scenery: the world is described as a place of distinct civilizations, cultures, and characters to meet. The result is a metroidvania adventure built around discovery as well as combat, with secrets threaded through its environments.
Its defining combat loop is absorption. Defeated foes can be shaped into molds, then used for special attacks such as hurling enemies, firing projectiles, or stunning them; some molds can also become summons. Hand-tendrils add another layer, letting the Formless parry or grasp enemies to absorb them. Surroundings matter in fights too, offering ways to damage nearby or distant opponents, while remaining dangerous to the player. Learning enemy forms connects these encounters to uncovering secret paths, so combat tools also support exploration.
A single-player format frames this as a focused journey through a dangerous, interconnected world rather than a shared-session game. Players can shape their approach with a broad selection of weapons, armor, abilities, and mold summons, while the Steam listing also notes adjustable difficulty and full controller support.
