Grim Trials Demo introduces Avelin, a young woman who dies unexpectedly and is recruited by Death as a Reaper. Her task is to hunt impure souls and endure trials in an underworld shaped by her own demons, with the personal hope of seeing her still-living love again. That afterlife premise gives the action a character-driven frame: the fights are part of Avelin’s struggle to earn her place among the Reapers.
Combat pairs a scythe with a crossbow, and the game rewards clever use of both weapons. Between battles, players gather materials and craft weapons, armor, and consumables, then combine equipment with skills selected at the start of each run and randomized Blessings acquired along the way. The demo is described around the first biome, with hard-hitting foes, a boss fight, and sidequests offering recipes. Its roguelite loop also carries earned experience and materials forward when Avelin falls, while the Academy provides mentors, quests, relationships, and stories about the dead.
The larger design context includes endless hex-grid arenas, traps, monsters, and multiple bosses, alongside customizable weapons and an expansive skill tree. Grim Trials combines repeated combat attempts with crafting and character progression, tying its mechanical variety to Avelin’s continuing trial in the afterlife.
