Gratuitous Space Battles skips the usual campaign preamble to focus on clashes between enormous science-fiction fleets. Rather than steering ships during combat, you take the role of admiral before a battle: design individual vessels, assemble a fleet and set its engagement orders. Once the fight begins, ships act according to those plans, making preparation and fleet composition the heart of play.
Its presentation pairs the spectacle of a real-time strategy battle with ship placement and design associated with tower defense, but the decisions are more about broad strategy than reflexes. You weigh protection from shields and armor against the offensive force of weapons such as laser cannons and plasma torpedoes. The game offers four unlockable player races, more than 40 ship hulls and over 120 modules, giving fleet construction a substantial range of documented components. Spatial anomalies also mean battles can use different rules.
The listed formats are skirmishes against AI opponents and an ongoing survival mode, so the focus stays on planning fleets for battles rather than directly piloting ships.
