Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865) frames the American Civil War as both a national struggle and a sequence of military engagements. Players choose a side and guide a real-time campaign from Secession toward the war’s end, balancing the work of running a nation with the challenge of assembling and sustaining its armies. Historical objectives give each side a campaign framework, while the game’s five scenarios begin at different points, from the pre-war period through 1864.
Its distinctive design connects broad strategic decisions to detailed battlefield command. Players manage supplies and railroads to move and support armies, while sieges, raids and blockades extend the contest across land and sea. Citizens’ and soldiers’ morale, the treasury and the unrest caused by measures such as drafting place pressure on the wider war effort. When opposing forces meet, battles unfold across historical terrain and can last multiple days, with engineers, reinforcements and reserves among the documented tactical elements. Hundreds of historical commanders, each with personal attributes and specializations, add another layer to army management.
The game also offers twenty stand-alone battles, alongside its campaign scenarios, spanning engagements from 1861 to Appomattox Court House in 1865. Its single-player classification further places these strategic and tactical decisions in a solo-play context.
