Generation Zero turns Östertörn, a Swedish region inspired by the Cold War era, into a hostile open world. Mysterious machines have overrun what was once a peaceful home, leaving danger in streets, forests and bunkers. The central aim is not simply to travel through the landscape, but to uncover what happened while deciding when to confront the forces hunting you.
Combat is framed as guerrilla warfare against sophisticated mechanical enemies, so choosing battles wisely is part of the premise. Players can fight alone or team up with as many as three friends. Defeated machines also provide scavenged parts, which feed into crafting equipment, weapons and ammunition. Experience gained in the fight helps characters grow stronger, while building and fortifying bases offers another way to push back across the island.
That combination of exploration, combat, scavenging and base-building gives Generation Zero a mix of solo and cooperative play rather than a single competitive match format.
