Set twelve years before the first Gears of War, Gears Tactics follows Gabe Diaz as he gathers survivors to hunt Ukkon, the Locust leader behind the growing threat on Sera. The familiar conflict becomes a squad-focused strategy game: instead of centering on a single soldier’s action, it asks players to lead troops through a desperate campaign of survival and sacrifice.
Its battles are turn-based but designed to feel aggressive and fast-paced, with players advancing their squad through dangerous encounters against swarming enemies. Between missions, troops can develop skills and equip loot, giving squad preparation a role alongside tactical decisions in combat. Towering boss fights add a different test, with enemies described as large enough to challenge existing strategies and alter the scale of a battle. The game also features Jack, whose skills are meant to help counter new, powerful enemies.
Its distinctive appeal lies in translating Gears’ desperate war story into commanding, upgrading and positioning a team, while keeping the series’ brutal encounters and imposing enemies at the heart of the design.
