When Fahrul’s king is murdered and chaos spreads, the queen calls on citizens to confront the threat. For The King builds that premise into a challenging mix of strategy, JRPG combat and roguelike elements. The journey moves across procedurally generated maps, where quests, loot and events vary between playthroughs, giving each expedition a different set of problems to solve.
Its turn-based battles use a dice-roll-inspired system, with attacks and special abilities managed through slots. Survival also involves gathering herbs to heal wounds and cure maladies, while deciding whether to camp safely or face the dangers of nightfall. Players can split their party to cover more ground or stay together for protection, making coordination and risk management central to the expedition. Lore earned between playthroughs can be used to acquire weapons, items, NPCs, classes and events, adding a longer-term progression layer to the roguelike structure.
The game supports solo play as well as local and online co-op, so its changing quests and tactical decisions can be approached alone or with others. Its listed content also includes several expansions and a Gold Rush Un-Cooperative Mode.
