Set in Wyoming in 1989, Firewatch casts Henry as a fire lookout who has withdrawn from a troubled life to watch for smoke during a hot, dry summer. His supervisor, Delilah, is his only contact with the outside world, reached through a handheld radio. When a strange event draws Henry away from his tower, the mystery unfolds across a wilderness that expands as he explores.
The first-person adventure pairs that exploration with conversations and consequential choices. Henry’s exchanges with Delilah help shape the story and their relationship, which the game describes as something the player’s decisions can build or damage. Discoveries lie across the landscape, while the central mystery gives Henry’s movement through the forest a narrative purpose rather than making the setting a backdrop alone.
Firewatch is explicitly a single-player experience, so its play format is a solitary, story-led journey rather than a cooperative or competitive activity.
