FINAL FANTASY XVI follows Clive Rosfield, a warrior sworn to protect his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix. After a great tragedy, Clive swears revenge on Ifrit, a mysterious Dark Eikon associated with calamity. The game places this personal story in a dark fantasy world where the fate of the land is bound to Eikons and the Dominants who wield them.
Its action centers on Clive’s swordplay and abilities drawn from multiple Eikons. Players choose which techniques and abilities to learn or upgrade, or can have upgrades unlocked automatically. The design also shifts between close-quarters encounters and “Titanic Clashes,” epic Eikon battles sparked when rival Dominants meet, giving the spectacle a place within the larger conflict rather than making combat solely about ordinary enemies.
Two play modes shape how players approach that action. Story-focused mode automates some evasion and lets players trigger Eikonic combos with simple button presses, while Action-focused mode puts every action under player control.
