FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 frames its role-playing adventure around choices that can reshape both the immediate surroundings and the flow of time. Rather than simply accepting a fixed destiny, players are invited to create a different future. The game’s branching possibilities give exploration a narrative purpose: the paths taken and the moments visited are part of how its story unfolds.
Time travel changes more than the backdrop. A location’s scenery, weather, plants and creatures vary depending on when it is visited, and following these changes is essential to seeing the full story. Environments also offer multiple routes and secrets, letting players shape their exploration. Battles add their own timing pressure through a battle clock that can reward or punish, alongside cinematic action sequences. Players can also recruit more than 150 monsters, each with distinct abilities, to contribute to party strategy.
As a single-player RPG, FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 is designed around an individual journey through its story, exploration and battles, rather than a shared multiplayer session.
