Farming Simulator 17 puts players in the role of a modern farmer, with a detailed North American setting among its open-world acreage. Its focus is practical farm work and expansion: cultivate crops, care for livestock, and sell what the farm produces to grow the operation. The broad setting gives those jobs room to unfold across a landscape rather than confining them to a small set of discrete missions.
The work spans several connected activities. Players can harvest crops including sunflowers and soy beans, tend to cows, sheep, chickens, and pigs, and take part in forestry. More than 250 authentic vehicles and pieces of equipment from over 75 manufacturers support the hands-on work. Transport is another part of the routine: goods can travel by truck and trailer, or players can load and drive trains to reach their destination.
That mix of farming, livestock care, forestry, and hauling makes the game a simulation built around managing varied tasks over time. Community-created mods offer another way to extend the experience with additional content.
